Liverpool Announce signing of Cody Gakpo

Liverpool announced the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, becoming the LaLiga club’s first arrival this winter.

“Liverpool Football Club have reached an agreement for the transfer of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, subject to a work permit.” Liverpool said in a statement.

“The 23-year-old forward will officially become a Reds player at the start of the January transfer window after agreeing personal terms and successfully completing a medical at the AXA Training Centre.” they added.

Gakpo joined the Red Devils after an impressive World Cup performance with the Netherlands, where he scored three goals in five appearances while assisting Virgil van Dijk in leading his country to the quarter-finals.

He was the top scorer in the Dutch championship before the World Cup break, with nine goals, and also led in assists, with 12.

“I feel really good, I’m really excited to be here. I’m looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club.” Gakpo said.

“I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years.”

“I think for me personally it’s also good to develop here and there’s a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from.” Gakpo added.

Gakpo, who was born and raised in Eindhoven, is a product of the PSV youth academy, having worked his way through the ranks to the first team, where he made his debut in February 2018.

He’s making a total of 159 appearances in all competitions and scoring 55 goals, one of which was decisive in the 2-1 victory over Ajax in April 2022 for the title of Dutch champion.
