Joe Hart, the former Manchester City and Celtic goalkeeper, has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the 2023/24 season.
The 37-year-old was voted the best goalkeeper in the Premier League three times in a row from 2010 to 2013.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I know the time is right. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to play for some amazing clubs and work with incredible people.” Hart said.
“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and I’ll cherish the memories forever.” Hart added.
Hart began his career at Shrewsbury Town in 2004 before making his name at Manchester City, where he spent 12 seasons.
He was a key part of the team’s early success under Roberto Mancini, establishing himself as the starting goalkeeper and helping the club win their first Premier League title in 2012.
After leaving Manchester City in 2018, Hart had spells with Torino, Burnley, West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur, and finally Celtic. He won the Scottish Premiership twice with Celtic and added to his trophy collection.
Hart also made 75 appearances for England, representing his country at the 2012 European Championship and the 2014 World Cup.
“There’s no right or wrong time. This is something I’ve thought about for a while,” Hart said.
“I’m still feeling physically great, but I just feel now is the right time to step away and explore other challenges.” he added.
He is widely regarded as one of the best English goalkeepers of his generation, known for his reflexes, shot-stopping ability, and commanding presence in the box.
Hart’s decision to retire comes after a successful season with Celtic, where he helped the club win their second consecutive Scottish Premiership title.
Hart acknowledged the changing demands of the sport and his desire to step away before his body forced him to.
He expressed his gratitude for the incredible journey, highlighting the cherished memories and the invaluable lessons learned throughout his career.
