Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open, with the Serb revealing that he is not ready to return to competitive action following a wrist injury he suffered during training in Monte Carlo.
The MMOpen organisers on Saturday confirmed the withdrawal of Djokovic without specifying the cause on Twitter.
“@DjokerNole is unable to compete at the #MMOPEN. Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to soe you back on court as soon as possible, Nole.” MMOpen twitted.
Djokovic has won the Mutua Madrid Open 3 times. In the years 2011, 2016, and 2019. With his 2019 he matched the record of Roger Federer who has won 3 Madrid Opens.
World number 1 has been suffering from a wrist injury since the Monte Carlo Masters. He wore a black arm bandage to assist his wrist during the match he lost to Lorenzo Musetti.
Rumours spread that he would miss the forthcoming tournaments, but he chose to compete in the Srpska Open in Banja Luka. However, he was defeated in the Quarterfinals by his fellow countryman Dusan Lajovic.
Spaniard Rafael Nadal, also has withdrew from the Madrid Open on Thursday due to his lingering hip injury.
“The last few weeks and months have been difficult. As you know, I picked up a significant injury in Australia.” Nadal said.
“First it was going to be a six to eight-week recovery period, we’re in the 14th week and the reality is that the situation is not what we expected.
“So far, I’ve missed Monte-Carlo and Barcelona and I also wanted to tell you that I won’t be able to be in Madrid.” Nadal added.
The world’s best tennis players will once again battle it out on the Caja Magica’s clay courts at the 21st edition of the Mutua Madrid Open from 24 April to 7 May.
