Tigst Assefa Wins The 2025 Women’s London Marathon

Tigst Assefa came in first place during the women’s race at the 2025 London Marathon. The event took place on a Sunday.

She set an impressive new world record by finishing the marathon in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds.

Assefa took the lead over Joyciline Jepkosgei from Kenya in the final kilometers. Earlier in the race on Sunday morning, both runners had set a very fast pace right from the start.

Last year, Peres Jepchirchir, the champion from the 2021 Olympics, was the winner. She achieved a world-record time.

This was special because it was set in a race that only had women runners, with no men to set the pace.

The 28-year-old Assefa admitted that the bright sun in London was a big help during the race. By the time the race finished, the temperature had nearly reached 20 degrees Celsius.

“Last year, I did have some problems with the cold. My hamstring tightened up towards the end of the race.” Assefa said.

“This year, the weather suited me really well, and that’s why I’m really pleased with the way the race went.

“I was second here last year, and to win here this year is very special.” Assefa added.

Meanwhile, Sabastian Sawe, a runner from Kenya, was the first to cross the finish line in the men’s race at the 2025 London Marathon.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo took a part in a marathon for the first time and managed to secure second place in the race.

“So happy, this is my first time to win a major marathon. I was well prepared for this race, and that’s why it has become easy for me to win,” Sawe said.

“It does now give me hope that my marathoning future will be so important to me, and it will be so easy to me.” Sawe added.
