NBA superstar Kevin Durant showered praise on LeBron James, highlighting his incredible 20-year career longevity.
After a long hiatus from competing against each other, the two icons will reignite their rivalry in the 2023/24 season.
In an interview with Rich Kleiman, Durant, who himself contemplated retirement last year, revealed his admiration for James’ unwavering dedication.
“What he has done is incredible. LeBron is 39 years old, playing his 21st year in the NBA,” Durant said.
“We are talking about a man who has spent more than half his life in the spotlight. He faced 40% of the players who have ever played in the league.
“So, this longevity, for me, is his greatest achievement. This has to me,” Durant added.
Despite approaching the twilight of his career, Durant continues to showcase elite-level basketball, even serving as captain of the Western Conference All-Star team this year.
One statistic truly paints the picture of James’ remarkable longevity: his point average compared to other 21-year NBA veterans.
At the 2024 All-Star Game, LeBron boasts an impressive 24.8 points per game average in the current season. The closest competitor in his 21st year was Vince Carter, who managed only 7.4 points in 2018/19.
Other legends like Dirk Nowitzki, Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett, and Kevin Willis pale in comparison with averages ranging from 2.7 to 7.3 points. Combined, their averages wouldn’t even match James’ current output.
Durant emphasises that beyond the numbers, it’s James’ enduring love for the game that truly inspires him. Even after two decades, James’ passion burns bright, setting a remarkable standard for younger generations.
“Like I said, it’s a world of pressure. Sports in general are like that. So, this all just makes his story even more fantastic.” Durant said.
“The enthusiasm and love he has for the sport even today, even with everything I mentioned, is phenomenal.
“And it doesn’t seem to me like he’s carrying a burden or anything like that. In fact, everything seems very simple to him.” he added.
