Takehiro Tomiyasu underwent a surgery on his right knee at Arsenal Football Club which means the 26-year-old full-back faces an estimated absence until 2025.
“Tomi will now begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, which is expected to be completed towards the end of this year.” Arsenal said in a statement.
“Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Tomi to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.” Arsenal added.
Tomiyasu faces a severe knee injury from his pre-season summer tour that affects both his performance level and availability as a member of the team.
“Takehiro Tomiyasu has undergone a successful surgery on the right knee issue which he first sustained in pre-season.” Arsenal said.
“Despite an initial surgical procedure in August, followed by a return to full training, and featuring as a substitute in our home Premier League match against Southampton in October, Tomi continued to have issues with his knee, resulting in a further corrective surgical procedure.” the club added.
Within his two seasons at Arsenal beginning in summer 2021 the Japanese defender emerged as an essential member of the team.
His persistent knee problems have caused him to make reduced impact on the field since the start of the year.
“I’m late in reporting this, but I had surgery on my right knee a few days ago and have already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.” Tomiyasu wrote on a social media.
The medical team attempted to treat the injury but had to perform surgery given his need for complete healing.
The medical procedure on Tomiyasu occurs strategically while Arsenal seeks to overcome their second-place position from last Premier League season to Manchester City.
Tomiyasu’s absence from the starting lineup will create a significant defensive void that may force the coaching team to modify defensive strategies and reorder players on the pitch.
